Discovering kcals of Strawberry Milk With Bomb Calorimeter
Sample Identification: Nesquik Strawberry Milk
Purpose: The purpose in this experiment was to verify the caloric accuracy of Nesquik Strawberry Milk through the utilization of a bomb calorimeter with a lyophilized sample.
Observations: Important to more frequently alternate freeze dried strawberry milk and dry ice in Wiley Mill. Temperature of the metal blades rose to quickly. This began to make the product a little gummy for part of the sample. Dry ice is critical for temperature maintenance of the metal surfaces in the mill. Clean up became a nightmare for TA’s and Dr. C.
Bomb Calorimeter Gross Heat:
Sample 1: 3904.3788 cal/g
Sample 2: 3905.3280 cal/g
1 calorie=0.001 kcal
(3904.3788 cal/g)/1000=3.9043788 kcal/g X 48 g total sample=187.41 kcal/serv
(3905.3280 cal/g)/1000=3.905328 kcal/g X 48 g total sample= 187.46 kcal/serv
Comments:
Both samples placed in the bomb calorimeter yielded converted calorie readings of about 187 kcals. A serving of Nesquik Strawberry Milk contains 180 kcals according to the product label. While not identical to the bomb calorimeter results, its close enough being within 5% error. Yielding identical round numbers in a food lab isn’t exactly a feasible goal. For a consumer, these results should provide confidence that the label they read for nutritional information regarding calories is quite accurate.
