Background: what is lipid extraction
Separate different substrate from a matrix on the basis of different solubility (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extraction_%28chemistry%29)
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the amount of fat in one serving of the sample by performing a lipid extraction using Soxhlet method.
Results:
Comment:
Our result is close to the lipid content given in the nutrition label (91.4/100).
However, since the result is slightly lower, the possible reasons may be:
1. Random error such as: the accuracy of the scale; some sample may loss during each step.
2. Organic solvent choice: Petroleum Ether but not Ethyl Ether
3. Extraction time: the recommended extraction time is 4 hours. Since we only waited for 2 hours, some lipid might remain in the sample, which lower our result.
Despite the daily value, and nutrition content, what do you care?
